The yoyo is a good example of how potential and kinetic energy can oscillate. When fully up and stationary it has zero kinetic and only potential, when it is fully down and rotating at max speed this energy has been converted to kinetic, then it climbs up again, and so on. The player has to keep providing a small input of energy to overcome friction losses.

It is both:

  • When it is moving up and down the string, it has kinetic energy.
  • At the far end of the string, it has built up potential energy (similar to a spring) to continue moving back up.
  • At the top of the travel near the hand, it has potential energy to fall back down.
  • At either end, the holder of the yo-yo can convert muscle energy (from the hand and arms) back to kinetic energy in the yo-yo to keep it moving.

A ball has potential energy if it is held at a height above the ground. A rolling ball has kinetic energy. If a ball rests on a plane it has no kinetic or potential energy.

Mechanical energy is a term that is used to describe potential or kinetic energ y?

both potential and kinetic energy

Is gasoline kinetic or potential energy?

It can be both, potential energy whilst in store, but kinetic energy when put to practical use.

Is a leaping frog potential or kinetic energy?

A leaping frog is an example of kinetic energy. Before the jump, the frog contains potential energy. When it jumps, the potential energy converts to energy of motion, otherwise known as kinetic energy.

What is an objects total and potential energy?

An objects total kinetic and potential energy is when both things are moving (kinetic) and the energy is stored in the object (potential)

Is mechanical energy potential or kinect?

Both kinetic energy and potential energy are mechanical energy.

What has kinetic and potential energy?

A roller coaster is a good example for a place to find both kinetic and potential energy. Before a drop, it has potential energy. At the end of a drop, it has kinetic energy. Half way through the drop, it has kinetic and potential energy at the same time.

Both

How is mechanical energy related to potential energy and kinetic energy?

Mechanical energy is a combination of potential and kinetic energy. It contains both types of energy.

What is the same and the difference between potential and kinetic energy?

Potential is stored energy and Kinetic is just simple movement like windmills are powerd with Kinetic energy. They are both energy.

A boulder falling through the air has what type of energy?

a boulder falling through the air still has some potential energy, but some of its potential energy has changed to kinetic energy...so it has both potential and kinetic!
