How does an educated population contribute to the success of a country?

Education is truly the key to development in any country. Those that are educated can solve a country's problems. Those with increased education can improve the country's infrastructure, economy, etc. and so forth. Education can also improve health: as children learn how to keep themselves healthy and others healthy, they will pass that knowledge on to their future children. Death rates can decrease through education when citizens learn how to handle disease and illness properly, as well as daily hygiene.

One problem that can emerge, however, is brain drain. Often times, those that become educated in developing countries will leave their country for more developed countries (such as the UK or US) to further their studies or just to live their. When this happens, the developing country will experience a brain drain because the educated people will have left.

1) most importantly, prosperity and well-being of a nation depends on whether citizens are informed and intelligent enough to elect officials who can plan ahead and execute more with pragmatism and less on ideology. A nation can prosper when laws are wise, and government incompetence and public corruption are less tolerated. Educated populace is supposed to be open-minded and be able to distinguish facts from fiction, to practice more reasonable citizenry.
2) Besides wise trade and governing policies, competitiveness of a nation also depends on science and technology. Building a bridge across a river or setting up a communications network cannot be faith-based; real products have to be fact-based. Facts come from education and a wise populace to judge so.
3) Lastly, legacy and history for our future generations. Education imparts knowledge that has been gained and provides a base to discover and acquire more knowledge, so we can be all contributing to the society, so we can better ourselves, and so we can strive toward utopia (which, by the way, cannot never be achieved, because we are not perfect; at least we try).

An educated population contributes to the success of a country because, firstly, when there is a large variety of skills in a population, there is a large variety of goods/services being produced in the country. Therefore, less goods/services would be imported and money can be saved in foreign exchange. Also, there would be more people being employed in the labour force. As a result, the government would receive more revenue from taxation and would have enough money to provide better and more social services. Lastly, there would be low levels of crime and a higher standard of living in the country.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2006 American Community Survey, which can be seen here Fresno ranks 95th of the largest 100 city in bachelor degree attainment. With only 19 % of the population attaining a bachelor's degree or higher, however in San Francisco about 43% of the population has at least a 4 year degree or higher.

This is unfortunate because those with a 4 year degree earn considerably more than employees with only a high school diploma. Around $27,000 per year more in 2009. It is also unfortunate because people with a bachelor's degree enjoy higher rates of employment. According to the Brooking Institute's report "The State of metropolitan America" 97% of people with a bachelors degree were employed in the 100 cities examined while those without a bachelors degree had much higher rates of unemployment.

Although Fresno has been an agriculture based town for a long time, we can no longer continue to rely on agriculture for jobs and prosperity. The best news, if you look at this way is smart cities get smarter. In San Francisco, despite having the second highest rate of college attainment, they have consistently increased the rate of college degree attainment. This means that if Fresno raises it's rate of attainment from 19% to 25%, we are likely to continue the trend, make more money, have lower unemployment rates and higher quality of life.
