arteriosclerosis is a condition wherein there is hardening and loss of elasticity of the arteries. it can affect blood pressure by increasing the workload of the heart. since the arteries are no longer elastic, it would require greater pumping action to allow the blood to pass through the artery.

∙ 7y agoAs humans age, the walls of the blood vessel also grow a bit harder and stiffer, with less flexibility. In such a condition, the plaques collect in the arteries. A plaque is a hardened mass composed of dead cells, lipids, platelets, and fibrous tissue. The flow of blood can be blocked through the artery. All of this can lead to higher than normal blood pressure since blood has to go through the artery, higher pressure is called upon. These can become blocked entirely and blood flow to a tissue will stop and the tissue will die. If it happens in the brain, it called a stroke. In the arteries that feed the heart muscles, it is called a heart attack.

∙ 9y agoCholesterol adds to sticky debris in blood vessels, which can cause narrowing of the lumen in vessels. So high cholesterol can increase blood pressure or make it harder for blood to push through blood vessels.

∙ 8y agoThere is no reason to blame atherosclerosis for changes in diastolic pressure. The walls of arteries become stiffer and a higher blood pressure is needed for the necessary blood flow through the body. This shown is by high systolic blood pressure. But a study published in 10/13/2015 in the Journal ~Circulation~ says that Quote: none of the diastolic blood pressure variables, were associated with atherosclerosis and complex atherosclerosis. End quote.
