it affects members of populations within an ecosystem because then when multiple groups are fighting for the same food, it can cause death because they're trying to get the same food - one way or another one species or one member is going to be hurt or killed through this competition. In the early days of the planet and evolution, this kind of competition ruled out species that were not strong enough to survive. Plants and animals had to adapt to survive these competitive conditions.

For an example, let's take dandellions and grass. The both compete for sunlight and nutrients. So the dandellions may soak up the nutrients from the soil and leave less for the grass. If this happens there wont be enough food for the grass and they grass will eventually die because of the limited amount of nutrients it is receiving. So this competition would act as a limiting factor for the grass.
