Dill's parents don't seem to want him or have anything to do with him. They ignored him so much that he decided to run away from home to the Finches household. Scout's father Atticus may not be the best parent figure but he is her friend. He helps her understand right from wrong and he loves her to the best of his ability. The last thing he does is ignore her,she is so young she craves attention. Scout does not have a mother, but she has Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandria.
Dill's family situation in "To Kill a Mockingbird" is less stable, as he is passed around among relatives and spends his summers with his aunt in Maycomb. Scout, on the other hand, lives with her father, Atticus, and brother, Jem, in a more traditional family setting. Despite this, both characters face challenges and learn valuable lessons throughout the story.
Scout and Jem live in a home where Atticus cares for them and for their safety. They are poor but not as poor as the Ewells and Cunninghams and others in Maycomb county. Dill left home because his new father left him to die in his basement. Dill was disliked by his father and a farmer kept him alive solely on raw field peas. Dill then pulled the chains loose from the walls and escaped. Disregard (not exactly correct): As you may notice, the Finches are better off than Dill's family. Not only are they richer in money, but also, they are richer in love for one another.
The fictional town of Maycomb re-creates the author's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. The town's old courthouse now draws 20,000 visitors a year and that "the old town square she explored barefoot and in overalls still stands, with the red-brick courthouse with the clock chimes and the hardware stores."
Dill lives predominately with his mother in Meridian but comes to stay with his Aunt Rachel in the summer in Maycomb. It is also said that his mother is a loose woman and Dill moves from relative to relative and comes to Aunt Rachel in the summer.
