After weathering has broken some of the pieces of of a rock or a object erosions part comes in. Erosion carries the pieces to another place and the pieces start to form another object leaving the other object with a cool shape such the Grand Canyon.

"How else"? The answer depends on what you have already read. Bear in mind that questions are answered by more than one person.

Erosion formed the Grand Canyon through one, and maybe a little of another, factor:

  • Fluvial - The Colorado River flows through the canyon. Through standard hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution, the river has eroded the canyon we see today. It continues to deepen the canyon by about six inches per year.
  • Aeolian - one can argue that in this arid environment, the wind could also have a great effect as there is a lot of exposed rock, which is not particularly resistant, and a lot of loose sediment to blow, and in some places, the canyon is quite narrow, which may result in high wind speeds. This would cause erosion, if true.

The above are, to my knowledge, the only ways in which the Grand Canyon could have been created, in terms of erosion.

The erosion that has shaped the Grand Canyon has taken over 2 billions years. The last 17 million of which have contributed much to the Colorado River. The Canyon is over a mile deep.

How was the Grand Canyon form?

The Grand Canyon was formed by the processes of weathering and erosion. The Colorado River and its tributaries formed the canyon as the Colorado Plateau was being geologically uplifted. The erosion occurred fairly recently, starting around 17 million years ago, but the geologic record exposed covers around 1.8 billion years. Erosion is the moving of material from one place to another. From the size of the Grand Canyon, you can see that a lot of material was moved. No one is 100% sure how all this erosion took place, but with the help of repeated periods of flooding during previous periods of glaciation, dams formed by volcanism and their eventual breach, the susceptibility of certain rock layers in the canyon to be undercut by layers below them, and the ability of the Colorado River to transport the sediments, it did occur.Erosionersion
