yes heating a substance does three things to a particle

  1. The particle gains heat energy
  2. The particles move further apart
  3. The partiicles move faster

Because they move further apart they change state and become a solid liquid or gas

As matter heats, the atoms become more active (since heat is energy), thus making the atoms move more freely. This looses bonds, and can make a solid object into a fluid (liquid or gas).

If a gas is cooled, the atoms slowly loose energy and move less. This makes the atoms be able to occupy less space, and "bond" to each other. This makes a solid (or a liquid).

How do heating and cooling cause physical changes in matter?

Heating and cooling change the state of the matter. For example, at room temperature water is a liquid but if you heated it becomes steam; a gas. If you freeze it it becomes ice; a solid. Hope it helps xx

What is the change of a liquid to a solid?

Matter exists as either liquids, solids or gases, these are known as states of matter. The state of matter can change by heating or cooling. The process of changing a liquid to a solid is called freezing.
