Heredity can affect intelligence because of factors such as socioeconomic status of the family, intelligence of the parents, the ethnicity, gender and education. This does not imply that children who come from lower socio-economic status must necessarily have a lower intelligence, rather that it is a factor when intelligence is developing.

Many mental health conditions have been shown to have a genetic component, which means that if you have a mother/father who suffers a certain mental health problem, this increases your likelihood of suffering the same condition.

There is debate as to whether the environment or genetics are the cause however, as some mental health problems that occur within families (eg mother and child) may be the case of parenting practices, living environment etc.
