It's really not intended for the purpose of helping mapmakers. That system of

measurement is intended to make life easier for the people who have to find

their way from place to place on the Earth's surface ... the sailors, fliers, and

drivers, who can't rely on what they see outside their window to take them

where they need to go. The map-makers also contribute to this effort.
