A Mechanical Wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium, transporting energy from one location to another location. The medium is simply the material through which the disturbance is moving; it can be thought of as a series of interacting particles.

The example of a slinky wave is often used to illustrate the nature of a wave. A disturbance is typically created within the slinky by the back and forth movement of the first coil of the slinky. The first coil becomes disturbed and begins to push or pull on the second coil. This push or pull on the second coil will displace the second coil from its equilibrium position. As the second coil becomes displaced, it begins to push or pull on the third coil; the push or pull on the third coil displaces it from its equilibrium position. As the third coil becomes displaced, it begins to push or pull on the fourth coil.

This process continues in consecutive fashion, with each individual particle acting to displace the adjacent particle. Subsequently the disturbance travels through the slinky. As the disturbance moves from coil to coil, the energy which was originally introduced into the first coil is transported along the medium from one location to another.

What are three types of a mechanical wave?

There are three general types of mechanical waves: – Transverse – particle motion is perpendicular to wave motion. – Longitudinal – particle motion is in the same direction as wave motion. – Combined – sea waves.

What is a direction that a mechanical wave can displace its medium?

Both parallel and perpendicular to the motion of the wave at the same time/Perpendicular to the motion of the wave/Parallel to the motion of the wave - APEXPerpendicular to the motion of the wave.Parallel to the motion of the wave. Both parallel and pependicular to the motion of the wave at the same time.

mechanical wave

How are the mechanical waves formed?

Any kind of disturbance triggers mechanical waves that propagate perpendicular to the motion of disturbance. However for mechanical motion, it is necessary that the wave is propagated in a medium.

Is a ultraviolet wave a mechanical wave?

A mechanical wave is describing something in motion and has a force to do something. An ultra violet is a type of radiation that increases melnin in the skin. Hope this helped!! :p

There are two basic forms of wave motion, for mechanical waves. These are longitudinal and transverse waves.

How could you prove experimentally that energy is associated with wave?

Measure the motion of matter created by the mechanical wave, or measure the temperature change of matter created by the electromagnetic wave.
