In physics, work is the transfer of energy to or from a material body that causes its motion in space. Work is performed when a force causes a body to be displaced or move a specified distance in the direction of the force. The mathematical equation for work is W (work)=f (force) x d (distance). Work is usually expressed in joules or ergs.
Work is another name for energy, when there is movement.
Work takes place when a force, F , acts through a distance in the direction that the force is acting.
Work requires two things :
( 1 ) a force, F
( 2 ) the force acting through a distance
For reversible work:
W = Integral [ F dx ] xi ----> xf
For gas confined to a cylinder with a movable piston, the reversible work is :
WB = Integral [ P dV ] Vi ----> Vf
Work units include :
ft - lbf ; N - m ; Btu ; and Joules
In physics, mass is the aggregate of matter in a body that is a measure of its inertia.
Based on the etymology of the word, physics can be defined in the following way: "Physics is the episteme of Nature, and Nature (Φύσις) is the phenomenon of spontaneous appearance and evolution." The same as in modern physics: there is really no physically meaningful way to define absolute motion.
The word 'work' in physics is defined as the transfer of energy from one material body to another. It is a body's displacement in space caused by an external force resulting in motion. If a force is applied but there is no displacement or motion, then no work is done. Also work is not done if a force is applied perpendicular to the body's displacement. Work is expressed in units such as joules or foot-pounds.
