Very often, the female eats the male. For praying mantis males, sex is a dangerous activity, since the females tend to eat them during copulation. However, the treat of death does not damage a male's sex drive. In fact, once the male's head has been chewed off, a nervous reflex causes him to copulate more vigorously. only if a male approaches the femal extremely carefully from behind, out of reach of her grasping forlegs, and then makes a hasty retreat, can he avoide being eaten.

Depending on the species, mantis can mate for as little as 12 hours or as long as 3 or 4 days. Make sure to feed your pet as they are mating, to avoid the female eating the male when they are done. They do that out of hunger, not out of some mating ritual. And make sure to keep an eye on your female she will lay ootheca around a week after mating, her abdomen will become large during that week and she may have issues walking or climbing she is so big!
