In an oligarchy a smallgroup of people hold the power (gained either by social status or military). The government claims to rule for people, but there are no free elections or 'real' representatives of them having a say in the government.

In a representative democracy peolple elect representatives and give them the right to vote on their behalf. There are free elections (citizens vote by secret ballots) with several candidates. Every vote has equal weight. It is based on majority rule comparing with the oligarchy which is based on a minority rule.

In a democracy the people choose who represents them. In an oligarchy they are told the name of the person who is the head of the government. There is no elections in an oligarchy nor choice. The ruling class rules the government and is there for the benefit of themselves and not the common good of the people.

What is the difference between a representative democracy and a oligarchy?

Democracy is (theoretically) governed by all of the people. An oligarchy is ruled by a small group of people... as "oli-" means "few." Some might argue that the broken democratic system of the US is creating a specific type of oligarchy called a plutocracy, which is when the wealthy rule.
