Gold is still a major measure of wealth, class and significance in many cultures. If you mean 'largest' in the sense of biggest land mass? That's not the same as most in metric pounds for industral use, nor for adornment use, nor technological use. In the United States of America and just about every place that's got a CPU or other chip to plug in, gold is an important metal. But what country is the largest gold user, that question cant be answered in my opinion.
