Back in the 'old days' hand held bellows were used to keep the fire hot and to increase the temperature as needed to allow the metal to heat to a certain point where it would become pliable, thus allowing them to be shaped. However nowadays many of the farriers forges are electric and do not require bellows as they stay at a consistent heat.
