When a carrier protein binds with a substance it changes it shape during the transport. When an enzyme is present with a substrate the enzyme then like a carrier protein will change its shape.

Transport proteins are like enzymes because:

  • they combine specifically with a particular substance, with which they have a complementary shape so that binding is specific; enzymes bind to their substrate, transport proteins combine with the transported molecule.
  • they can be saturated; once the concentration of the transported molecule exceeds the number of available transport proteins the maximum rate of transport is achieved ie it is saturated; in enzymes increasing the concentration of the substrate eventually leads to saturation of the binding sites (active sites) of the enzyme molecules.
