The liquid crystal forms little shutters that polarize the light. They need another permanent polarized light filter in front that is oriented 90 degrees different. This cancels the light completely and makes the display opaque.

The Liquid crystal can be altered electrically.

Contacts inside the glass envelope are a very thin, transparent layer of silver.

The arrangement of the sliver contacts can make the segments of a number display, symbols or pixels.
