Mitochondria and cells replicate at differing rate, so an athlete would have a greater number of mitochondria per cell allowing that individual to produce more energy in the form of ATP. The act of elevated aerobic respiration causes the mitochondria to replicate faster thus more per cell, as well as the opposite happening with a person is lazy.
