Therefore, geologist believe that how they observer the rocks cycle today is how it has always been happening. This means that we can extrapolate the things we see happening today into the past to understand how rocks change from igneous to sedimentary to metamorphic.

Thus if we see now that floods carrying mud covers over the mud form previous floods, then the top most mud is younger than the layer blow it. Thus using uniformitarianism we can look at old rocks and say that the layers get younger as one goes up the rock sequence.
