It aims its venomous spit at the attackers eyes partially or even permanently blinding them. If it misses the spit is usually enough warning for the attacker and it will probably leave it alone.

The Spitting Cobra uses muscle contractions to re-direct the venom out of tiny holes at the base of the fangs. This propels a stream of venom forwards - and is usually directed towards the eyes as a defence. During 'normal' use, the venom is sent to the tip of the fangs for injection into prey.

There is a tiny hole at the base of the fang - where it leaves the gums. Muscular contractions force the venom through the hole - and it's usually aimed at the attackers eyes.

They actually spray venom. They spray it from their fangs and into a predators eyes to cause blindness.
