The most famous statement that sums up this idea isfrom William Shakespeare's play,The Tempest,"What’s past is prologue".
And from GeorgeSantayana,"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
But, the old English saying,"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." speaks to the one weakness in the idea. In other words, there will always be a given number of people who have no interest in the past, so there will always be a group with collective amnesia.
The study of history is an important defense against making the same mistakes that were made in the past. That it will protect us is an overstatement. This question is relevant insofar as many people take history very lightly. In addition to the above, two lines from the philosopher Nietzsche, written in different books, provides additional reasons for the value of history. Over immense stretches of time the product of the intellect has been wrong. This is a paraphrase, as the exact quote is unavailable. What is meant however is that Nietzsche points out that the study of history will demonstrate the faults of the human intellect in making decisions. In a direct quote Nietzsche says: All philosophy has now fallen forfeit to history.
