As the sun warms the Earth's surface, the atmosphere warms too. Some parts of the Earth receive direct rays from the sun all year and are always warm. Other places receive indirect rays, so the climate is colder. Warm air, which weighs less than cold air, rises. Then cool air moves in and replaces the rising warm air. This movement of air is what makes the wind blow.

What is a comets tail caused by?

A comets tail is pushed because of the solar wind.

Why the wind speeds on the gas giant planets are so much greater than the wind speeds on earth?

Probably the biggest reason is that there is no land to slow down the wind. Also, wind is caused by differences in air pressure, which are caused by uneven heating and cooling. The gas giants have not only the heat from the sun but also their own internal heat. Jupiter is so massive that it generates more heat than it receives from the sun.

What is the process that breaks down rock and other substance at earth's surface?

Weathering, which is caused by water, ice, wind and sun.

What is the movement of water into the atmosphere as it changes from a liquid to a gas is called .?

The movement is caused by evaporation from the Sun and wind, and is part of the water cycle.

Are there any winds on another planet in your solar system?

Absolutely! Any planet that has an atmosphere will have wind. Wind is created both by the rotation of the planet about its axis and by differences in temperature caused by heating by the sun.

How can you use wind power?

wind power is caused by the sun and heats the atmosphere, this causes normal winds.

How the energy in waves originally came from the Sun?

The energy from waves is usually caused by the wind; the wind is caused by temperature differences among different parts of Earth; and these temperature differences are caused by the sunlight.

What is the fuel source of wind?

The wind is caused by a combination of the Earth's rotation and the heat of the sun causing convection currents in the atmosphere.

What does a comet tail always point?

Away from the Sun. The tails is caused by the solar wind.

How does the sun makes waves?

The Sun doesn't create waves on the ocean and large bodies of water. The waves are caused by the wind.

Why the tail of comets increase or deacrese as it goes round the sun?

The tail of the comets is caused by the solar wind - particles blown away form the Sun. When the comet is closer to the Sun, the solar wind becomes stronger.

What direction does a comets tail always points?

Away from the Sun. The tails is caused by the solar wind.

Which engery resource does not produce harmful waste of pollution?

What are the different kinds winds?

Wind is the movement of air from areas of high pressure to low pressure, there are no "types" of wind. Wind is mainly caused by the heating and cooling of the earth via the sun.

Where is the energy source found in wind?

Wind is created by the sun heating the air causing it to expand and move, and it is caused by the speed the earth rotates under the atmosphere.
