if you mean volcanic ash.

first it mixes with the moisture in your lungs and becomes a thick muddy mess, second the ash contains sulfur which combines with moisture to form sulfuric acid..

these two things will surely kill you if you inhale enough of it.

Small amounts of ash usually aren't a big problem.

Large amounts of ash can be deadly. Several people were killed during the last eruption of Mt. St. Helens by being buried alive in very hot ash.

Ash can also be very damaging to engines and equipment. Thus during the recent Iceland eruptions, many airplane flights were re-routed to protect the people onboard.

At moderate concentrations, it might be advisable just to wear a mask to decrease the number of ash particles being inhaled.

Healthy individuals might not need masks if the ash is light.

Yes. Volcanic ash can be deadly if inhaled, and the weight of it can cause roofs to collapse. Some eruptions produce avalanche-like clouds of volcanic ash called pyroclastic flows, which are hot enough to kill a person instantly.

Volcanic ash can clog the throat and damage the lining of the lungs, causing asphyxiation. The ash is also heavy, especially if soaked by rain, and can cause roofs to collapse. Explosive eruptions often produce clouds of superheated ash, rock, and gas called pyroclastic flows which race down the sides of a volcano, burning everything they touch.
