If the compress air filled in the cylinder from both side alternatively i.e. from inlet port as well as from outlet port then it is called as the Double acting cylinder. it is used when the piston is required to perform the work in forward as well as return movement of piston.
advantage and disevantage
Single Acting Cylinders:In single acting cylinders the fluid is pressurized from only one side of the cylinder during both the expansion as well as the retraction process.Double Acting Cylinders:In the double acting cylinders, the pressure from the fluid is applied in both the directions.Any double-acting cylinder may be used as a single-acting unit by draining the inactive end.By hamza_siddiqui@hotmail.com
Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems are similar in that they both use double/single acting cylinders to operate something - Be it an automatic door for pneumatics and other such trivial tasks, or JCBs with hydraulics. Another key similarity would be the way in which they work - they both take the easiest path where available and both use 3/2 valves. A major difference between them is the pressures involved, the output forces and the use of 4/3 (hydraulics) and 5/2 (pneumatics) to operate a double acting cylinder.

Air cylinder or air rams consists of a tube with a sealed base, a piston attached to a rod and a gland to seal the tube and rod where the rod exits the barrel. This assembly is called the cylinder or ram. The ram is ported in the top and bottom to allow pressurized air to enter and exit the cylinder. This moves the piston which is attached to the rod and created the movement. Cylinders are usually stationary at one end and the rod is attached to a moving part. This is called a double-acting cylinder because pressurized air can be let into both sides of the cylinder to create movement. A single-acting cylinder relies on gravity to extend or retract it as it is only ported on either the top or bottom side of the cylinder.
Single action actuating cylinder means that fail action (open or close) is accomplished by spring mounted on the opposite side of pneumatic cylinder and normal operation by airDouble acting cylinder means that both, opening and closing, manoeuvres are accomplished by pneumatic cylinder.
Single-acting devices consist of a large plunger, or piston, into which oil (or air in a pneumatic cylinder) is pumped.

working of single acting and double acting cylinder
A Direct Acting (DA) pneumatic thermostat increases branch line pressure as temperature increases. A Reverse Acting (RA) pneumatic thermostat decreases branch line pressure as temperature increases.
a Three Way Solenoid valve is required to operate a double acting Pneumatic Actuator , depending of the orientation of the Actuator could operate as a Fail to open or Fail to Close .
Its the distance from piston back, to piston out

Reciprocating compressors are either single- or double-acting. In single-acting machines the compression takes place on only one side of the piston; double-acting machines use both sides of the cylinder for compression.
You will usually find a pneumatic cylinder as a shock absorber in an auto. They reduce the amount of bounce that is transmitted to a passenger riding in the car.
A basic Pneumatic system can contain simply 3 things: - An air supply (compressor) - A 3/2 valve - A single acting cylinder. This is a simple system that will open and close something when a button is pressed/released.
