Why is education a key to improve oneself?

A better society is one that more effectively deals with the problems it faces. Currently, we live in a world of unprecedented complexity and consequent challenging problems (think of global warming as an example). In a democracy, society's actions should reflect the will of the people, so it follows that the people need to be capable of understanding the complex problems we face. Here is where education comes in. The more educated a population is the better equipped it is to understand and solve the problems it faces, because education builds knowledge, thinking, and communication skills.

The very basic education received in school accomplishes two purposes:

1) It provides a framework for future studies or occupations. There are things that you must know before you can enter any profession. You learn more complex information based on the less complex information. This is especially true in mathematics.

2) The learning and study skills used in various school subjects can also be applied to on-the-job training in most vocations.

A knowledge of verbal and written communication is essential to any occupation where you interact with other individuals, either fellow workers, managers, or customers.
