Repairing the fault which is causing the check engine light is the recommended way to go about doing this.
You have to fix the reason the light came on in the first place before you reset the check engine light. Your local auto parts store can help you with the first step of reading the code(s). They will do this for you at no cost. Then repost the question here with the codes they retrieved. We can help you better knowing that information.
There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
usee a rubber :)
Without a code reader (you can buy one for about $80 at most auto parts stores), you can sometimes erase the codes by disconnecting the battery cables. Most newer code readers allow you to erase the computer memory.

As with any check engine light in an OBDII Vehicle (1996 and newer), use an OBDII scanner to FIRST read your codes and find out why it was on in the first place, then SECOND erase the code using the erase command on the scanner. If you don't fix the problem that caused the light to come on in the first place, it will always return.
To reset the check engine light on a 1994 Honda Civic locate the fuse box in the engine compartment. Find the ECU fuse and pull it off for at least 5 seconds. This will erase all codes on the ECU.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes, then reconnect. This will erase the codes in the computer that makes the CHECK ENGINE light come on. If everything is okay, the CHECK ENGINE will stay off. Tried exactly that advice on my 2001 Camry....and it worked like a charm!!!
You fix problem first, then set tyour Code reader to "Erase code", turn on engine and check again .Sometimes it takes 2-3 starts to erase.
Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes or use an error code reader to erase the computer to the default configuration.
