The subcutaneous tissue is a layer of tissue that lies immediately below the dermis of vertebrate skin. This is a connective tissue layer.Ê
What does an area of indurated tissue = a hard lump located in the subcutaneous fat = under the skin, but not too far under anteriorly and medially at the front a little towards the middle LOL In other words, nothing you probably didn't find with your fingers. I hope you get some more answers soon.
There is 1 layer of skin, but the skin itself is made up of 7 different layers on a microscopic level. Each layer has a different function. We normally only talk about the 3 main layers within the skin - the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is however made up of 5 layers within itself, which gives you the total of 7.So it is far from the idea that you could peel of 6 layers of your skin and have a good layer underneath the same as you have currently on your body. You'd actually just be left with subcutaneous tissue which would be no good on its own at all.
It goes so far down that it can cause major scarring or damage the skin tissue really badly.
As far as I know they are in the epidermis, so no.
As far as the last skin layer

Cartilage is a far more primitive tissue than bone
Subcutaneous injections are best given half-way up the neck in front of the shoulder, between the shoulder blades or over the ribs well behind the shoulder. NEVER give a subQ shot on the hindquarters! If you are giving it in the neck, it's best to form a tent with one hand, then insert the needle at a 30 to 45 degree in any part of the tent with the other hand. Be careful about how far you put the needle in, as most cases you don't need to have the needle all the way in to inject subQ. Some producers are really good at doing it one-handed, just by inserting the needle at a shallow angle (~30o) to the angle of the neck so that the needle is inserted under the skin.
The skin
I believe it is the skin, by far.
If it doesn't go deep enough into the skin then the skin could reject the ink or get infected.
