∙ 12y agoThe name "Quarter horse" actually comes from being considered the fastest horse for the 1/4 mile. Whereas thoroughbreds are faster in a longer stretch. Quarterhorse were originally small muscular horse (cow ponies). This has changed somewhat through selective breeding. They are now a larger, but still very muscular breed. "Racing quarter horses" are often crosses of thoroughbreds and quarter horses and are registered as "appendix" quarter horses.
