Saber toothed cats weren't built for speed. The most famous genus of saber toothed cats, Smilodon, had a short lumbar region in the back and longer forelimbs than hind limbs, two traits that don't make very good runners. When it comes to hunting, saber toothed cats probably used stealth to get close to their prey, and then would tackle it with their muscular forelimbs. There is some evidence the Smilodon may even have hunted in packs.
