Since Japan is an Island, they were very isolated from the rest of the world in earlier centuries. Their culture grew up separately from the rest of the world. They did not really trust foreigners because they did not really see them. In earlier times most of their money came from agriculture. However now they are a global country, and they actively trade with other countries.
