I am not an expert, but my grandmother uses baking soda and vinegar to clean her drains, so I imagine it is good to use (She is 93 and knows every helpful house tip there is). She puts a couple tablespoons of baking soda down the drain, then pours some vinegar down. After a few minutes, she runs really hot water down the drain to rinse everything clean. Not only does this clean the drain, but it also gets rid of bad odors. Make sure you use white distilled vinegar.

Baking SODA and vinegar may work.

Baking powder has cream of tartar (acts like the vinegar when it gets wet) and essentially reacts instantly, but you want the delayed reaction so the baking soda gets in solution hopefully under the clog and the vinegar can get a chance to work on the clog, otherwise you just generate gas on top of the clog.

Yes, it can. The chemical reaction can help clear minor clogs and it's non-toxic, unlike other products you use.

Be aware that if you've already tried some other cleaner (like Drano, etc.), this can cause significant spray upward of caustic chemicals. Always protect your face, especially your eyes and mouth.

A mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clear drains has proven to be a very good solution to use. It will unclog most drains and a weekly or monthly deposit of vinegar in the drain will help to keep it clear.

Why won't the liquid run away in the washing machine?

Did you mean "why won't it drain"? The machine could have a damaged pump or a clogged drain. The pump can get damaged if small clothing gets stuck in it. Check the pump area and remove small clothes such as socks and undergarments. If it is clogged, try cleaning the machine. Treat the drain with a vinegar and baking soda solution. This solution helps get rid of collected dirt, molds and hard minerals.
