Knowledge of the atom has vastly extended scientific knowledge and inquiry. Not only did the realization that atoms existed were a phenomenal discovery in itself--but it allowed people to not only treat illnesses at a molecular level but also gave way to even more fantastic discoveries like vaccinations and stem cell research. If not for the discovery of the atom, scientists would not have found out what matter essentially consists of and thus much research that could have been conducted might never have happened without it.
