it is about 15 tonnes, about the weight of 15 small cars

The weight of an unladen London double decker bus is 12 tons. Approximately 15 passengers equal 1 ton, and as 90 passengers can easily get on a double decker then you can add 6 tons to the original 12, making 18 tons when full. As the old Routemaster's were only 7 tons unladen, then you can see why London's road surfaces are so badly damaged. The manufacturers will tell you that the hydraulics of a modern day bus spread the load, but the fact is there for all to see; 18 tons of bus is still going to weigh 18 tons, whatever you do with it.
