The largest sand dune in the world is in the Sechura Desert in Peru. It is 1176 m (3858 ft) -- an extraordinary height, especially when considering that the next tallest is less than half of that height (550 m).
However, even higher is the Duna Federico Kirbus, in the Fiambalá Basin of Argentina. Originally estimated at a height of 800 meters (2600 ft), it has been measured to 1230 meters (4000 ft) above its base at an elevation of about 5300 feet. Rather than the stereotypical peaked dunes, the sand is being blown up the steep western faces of the adjacent mountains.
There is a table on Wikipedia that sums up the world's tallest dunes.
