Ideally we would like the morning sugar to be down around 100 mg/dl and for it to not go much above 140 after meals. Diabetes is mostly monitored by measuring the A1c which gives an estimate of the avergae sugar over the last 3 months. The diabetes is considered well controled if the A1c is less than 7% which correlates to an average glucose of about 135 mg/dl.
