The Greeks would often go and sacrifice different goods in certain areas at certain times. They would also pray, honor, and celebrate the different gods when they were in need or it was a certain time of the year. They were their rulers and they honored them while still honoring their kings and queens.

The ancient Greeks had wondered many things about the world. They were confused with why there were storms, calm days, and cold times. So, they had somehow come up with these Gods and Goddesses. They thought that if there were any storms that Zeus was angry. This made more sense to them about the world.

Religion played a major part in Greek culture, but not in the way Christianity defines our culture and thinking. Greek gods were there to protect and help you, at least if you asked them properly first. So if for instance you went on a dangerous journey, you asked the god Hermes for protection first, by making a public offering. More important to Greek individuals were the Penates or household gods who protected his house and his family. Small daily offerings were made to them to ensure that protection.

But: Greek religion did not (as Christianity does) impose rules on everyday morality and their priests did not bother themselves with the question how people should lead their lives. So you did not have - as Christians are having today - heated arguments on moral issues based on what the Holy Book says about them; simply because Greek religion did not have a holy book. And their gods were often themselves notoriously a-moral or even immoral.

They used it daily because they worshiped idols and statues of their gods daily. Every family did it but at their own time. Or families would go to the temple and worship there.

In ancient Greece (as in other times and places) people depended upon religion to help them to make sense of an otherwise mysterious and incomprehensible world.
