Like a lot of South American countries, on Palm Sunday a large statue of Jesus on a Donkey is carried through the streets of towns and villages before it is taken into the Church for the Palm Sunday Service.

People celebrate the passion of Christ, his death and his resurrection for more than 10 days. Processions through the streets last for hours. People wear mourning clothing.

There are lots of sweets, celebrations and fireworks.

The Semana Santa celebration in Ayacucho is Peru's most beautiful and breathtaking Holy Week. It can only be compared to the one in Sevilla, Spain.

They start by entering the city on donkeys for the entry of Jesus. But for those who don't know Jesus drink or go camping on this long weekend. On Wednesday they parade the images of Virgin Mary and St. John. On the roads which are covered in flower petals. They will parade these images until they meet up with another group who are parading Christ image. On Holy Friday lights lead the way to the Christ of Cawary. Lines of men and women strictly dressed in mourning bearing lit candles. Finally they end this parade with prayers and songs throughout the night.

Is Easter celebrated in Peru?

Yes it is celebrated in Peru. It is an important holiday. ANSWER I would think not, i mean, some do but since Easter, which celebrates Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead, is Christianity's most important holiday and there are only approx. 1% Christians in Peru. I understand Peru is widely made up of Roman Catholics, but they are not exactly the same as the Catholics we have grown up around (I would assume you knwo what a Catholic is, sorry to offend you if you don't).
