But the 1939 film had the Witch capture just Dorothy and Toto, and leave the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion unharmed. Then again, the 1939 film version of The Wiz achieved greater critical and financial success than the 1978 film version of The Wiz. For its costs were twice the revenue from movie ticket sales. But the 1939 film cost about $300,000 less than the revenue from sales. Some sources have said that the film initially lost money, because of a costly promotional campaign. But these sources also indicated that the film became profitable with its re-release in 1949, and increasingly so in succeeding years what with revenue from runs on television, and from videocassette and DVD releases. Both films received Academy Award nominations, for best art direction, cinematography, and original music score. But the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz also received nominations as best picture, and for best song and best visual effects. And the awards went to its song Over the Rainbow, its music score, and its juvenile performance by Ethel Frances Gumm ka Judy Garland [June 10, 1922-June 22, 1969], who also was being recognized for her skilled acting in Babes in Arms of the same year. Both films also targeted the importance of the dancing skills of the character ka the Scarecrow. In The Wizard of Oz, that role went to Raymond Wallace Bulcao ka Ray Bolger [January 10, 1904-January 15, 1987]. In The Wiz, that role went to Hinton G. Battle [b. November 29, 1956]. And both films saw reassignment of one of the top roles due to an actor going over the heads of those directly iinvolved in the plans and the filming. For the role of the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz originally was assigned to Christian Rudolph ka Buddy Ebsen, Jr. [April 2, 1908-July 6, 2003]. Bolger was assigned the role of the Tin Woodman until he took his dissatisfaction to producer/director Mervyn LeRoy [October 15, 1900-September 13, 1987]. And the role of Dorothy in The Wiz originally was expected to go to Stephanie Mills [b. March 22, 1957], who had played the character in the play version of 1975. But Diane Ernestine ka Diana Ross [b. March 26, 1944] persuaded Robert Cohen [b. March 12, 1949] of Universal Pictures to produce the film and give her the role. And also the originals on which both films were based were most successful. For The Wizard of Oz was based on the book of the same name. The book never went out of print, and had been adapted into numerous, previous versions on stage and screen. The Wiz was based on the play of the same name. It was considered one of the most successful musicals in its time, and received Tony Awards as best musical, and for best original score.
