Macbeth tried to do a good job, and to be recognized for his good work. Clearly, he set goals for himself. He wasn't the type of person to do the bare minimum on the job. For example, he made sure that the Norwegian invaders and the Scottish rebels were defeated. He threw himself right in the middle of the bloodiest action. With such a results-oriented personality, Macbeth undoubtedly thought about promotion. He never shared how far he would have thought of going if he hadn't heard the predictions of the three witches. But Macbeth did the best job that he could, and hoped for and expected the best rewards. Kingship was all part of his work ethic of taking on more responsibility and receiving greater rewards.
