Yes, Poseidon represents a pagan religion long since destroyed and forgotten about. Greek pagan beliefs were destroyed yet carried on by the Romans, who later obliterated paganism through Christianity. Rome accepted Christianity as is "official religion". Yet, Poseidon represents the same thing he represented in Greek times, as more and more people turn away from Christianity...the pagan gods may take back the religious throne, or maybe the true religion will come to play.
