Usually ist starts with a lump of aluminium, which is then pressed through a template to create a profiled extrusion. The profile is then cut to length, rolled into a hoop, and joined. It can either be pinned or welded together. Sometimes the brake surface(if it's intended for rim brakes) will be machined for smoother performance. Then holes are drilled for the spoke nipples, and sometimes reinforced by adding eyelets.
Paint, anodization, and stickers may also be added.

∙ 14y agoUsually they begin life as an aluminum profile that gets rolled into a hoop, joined and then drilled for the spokes. Some are joined by welding, some are pinned. Some have various surface treatments or their brake surfaces machined for consistency while others are pretty much left raw. Rims can also be made of steel, but that process is pretty much the same. There are also Carbon Fiber rims. Fibers and resin are loaded into a mold and left to cure.

I built my Saruca by cutting a bicycle rim in half and putting stainless steel screen in side the rim pieces, then pop riveting the 2 bicycle rims back together. It works well. Split the bike rim lengthwise..not crosswise.. however you must remove about an inch from the top rim piece as once the rim is inside the outer rim it will need to be a bit smaller to fit tightly.
