Just had one done less than three months ago.
You really do not do much bowel prep for this, other than stop eating 12 hours before the test.
When you arrive at the hospital they fit you with a shoulder belt.
they attach electrodes (they stick to the skin like a bandage) There are 8 in various positions all with wires that lead back to the recording unit.
They attach the wires from the electrodes to the recorder, they give you a pill about the size of a small peanut in a shell and a drink of water. Inside the pill is a blinking light.
They test the recorder to make sure it is receiving the signal from the camera (inside the pill).
You are free to go, shopping, home, anything not too strenuous (you can't do things that might damage the equipment). You can have a drink 1 hour after the start of the test and something light to eat after 3 hours.
You are asked to keep a record of everything you do, such as drink, eat, and kind of keep a diary about activities every 30 minutes.
After about 6 to 8 hours you go back to the hospital and they remove the equipment and you go home.
If you have active crohn's you will have already passed the pill out into the toilet and flushed it away (they do not re-use them).
Nothing to fret about, it does not hurt or bother you in any way.
The pill is a small camera and the recorder captures a picture of the inside of your bowel every 15 seconds for the time it travels through your intestines.
Some doctors will show you the pictures if you ask when you go back in for results.
capsule endoscopy was FDA approved in 2001.

A capsule endoscopy is a type of medical procedure in which one must swallow a camera the size of a pill that takes pictures of their insides. The purpose of capsule endoscopy is to make sure the small intestine is working properly.
Wireless capsule endoscopy-- A newer method of examining the small bowel by means of a capsule swallowed by the patient. The capsule contains a miniaturized lens and an antenna that transmits information to a belt-pack recorder worn by the patient.
No such thing as a capsule bowel loop. However there is capsule endoscopy used to investigate the bowels

I work for a GI group and we do the capsule endo. I know that the capsule itself cost around $1,500. I think the total we charge is around $2500 -$3000.
Capsule Endoscopy is one of the most recent technological advancements in gastroenterology.
Gavriel Iddan is an Israeli electro-optical engineer is the inventor of wireless capsule endoscopy i.e pill camera
The next step would likely be a capsule endoscopy, which is a pill that has a tiny camera in it. Your brother would swallow the camera, and it would work its way through his intestines taking hundreds of pictures. These would then be reviewed by his doctor. Capsule endoscopy is able to give us information about the small intestine, which is the portion of the intestines that cannot be directly examined by endoscopy (an instrument such as upper endoscope or colonoscope). Sometimes, a test called a bleeding scan may be ordered; this can give an idea of where an area of bleeding is occurring which can then guide further therapy.
Kaushal, thank you for the feedback. What a relief to hear your brother's colonoscopy was normal. I hope you all are able to get some answers with the capsule endoscopy. It was my pleasure to help!
