The average person will generally use "theory" in the way a scientist would say "hypothesis." Hypotheses are unproven; theory is based on fact.

For example, germ theory is the explanation for diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites, theory of gravity explains the univeral attractive force between all matter, and the theory of evolution explains the diversity of life we find on earth. These are all supported a mountain of facts which are usually verified across several braches of science.

Theory is something which is imaginative and in paper or Book .When this theory is being put to practice in everyday use it becomes practical. One can apply theory in everyday use by practice.

For eg. A scientist performs an experiment in a Lab by jotting down his own ideas and preparing a theory as written Report.

When he performs this theory in the Lab conducting experiments which will give final Results as per his requirment then it becomes a practice ,then he can use these results in everyday use .

How is the meaning of theory in science different from the every day use of the term?

The everyday use of "theory" implies opinion or generalization such as expressing a "theory" about O.J. Simpson and the murder he was tried for. The Theory of Evolution is a scientific example.
