Visibility is traditionally measured by the use of large high contrast targets (in daylight), at whatever range they can no longer be seen clearly or start to fade out - that was considered the visible limit and recorded as a distance. For example fog will make the targets over 3,300ft completely invisible.

Modern methods use a laser sent from one transmissometer to another - the drop off in energy received is then calculated and a reading obtained. Measurements are expressed in feet/metres and as a climate condition such as;

ZERO 330ft or less

FOG 3300ft or less
