long bones grow at either end due to growth plates witch are made of cartilage, during adolescents the cartilage will begin to slow growing, eventually stopping and the growth plates are covered in bone. Bones are constantly breaking down and growing due to osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Osteoclasts break down bone whilst osteoblast replace bone, this is how your bone repairs after a break, the osteoclasts break down the bone and the osteoblast rebuild and reshape your bone.
