The procedure of performing circumcision depends upon whether it's to an infant, particularly a newborn of less than six weeks, or older. The age variants will not dictate how circumcision is performed because the procedure is relatively the same, but whether anesthetic will be administered and how.

Mechanically, a stainless steel or plastic bell shaped device is placed between the foreskin and the head of the penis. This protects the head from any accidental incision. If local anesthetic is administered, it is injected at this point into the base of the penis, into the cavernous muscle and skin. In adults there may be two different injection sites (the 10 o'clock and the two o'clock positions).

The circumcisionist ( a surgeon or a specially-trained Rabbi) will then mark the area of the foreskin to be removed.

Next, the tissue is crushed with the hemostats in adult cases, and the foreskin

is cut from the top to the marked area. Now the foreskin is sliced off around the protected glans (the head of the penis). Finally, the parietal and visceral layers of the now-exposed incision are sutured together, except in the case of newborns, to whom this part is not necessary.

However, today, physicians have now developed a new method of circumcision that produces a cleaner, faster, easier, and virtually infection free methodology in performing circumcisions. they have now come up with a device that is attached to the penis with a tubular device that is placed over the head, and clamp that fastens on to the tubular device which crushes the foreskin, allowing the surgeon to perform a more precise circumcision with uniform results. After the procedure has been completed the device is left on the penis for for another five days before it is removed, negating the need for suturing. when the device is removed the necrotic tissue left behind will disappear in another three days.

It's surgery that is performed by a urologist. You get a injection to numb the area and then they cut the foreskin off and stitch up around it. You will be in some pain and discomfort for about 2-4 weeks until it has healed.

Traditionally, circumcisions were performed with a knife, or, in more primitive societies, with a sharp stone. The foreskin was stretched out and sliced off. In more modern times standard surgical tools became commonly used.

Currently, there are some devices which consist of a pair of plastic tubes where one is fitted inside the foreskin and the other is snapped over the outside, both cutting the skin and pinching the blood vessels to stop the bleeding. The device is left attached until the skin heals and it falls off on its own.

the vast majority of children are circumcised in the middle eastern Muslim country's Indonesia and in Israel.for religious reasons. during the Victorian era the British introduced the idea that circumcision would stop boys from masturbating which in their opinion was responsible fro more then a hundred different diseases ranging from syphilis to blindness to insanity and bed wetting. from there the idea infected the rest of the English speaking cultures. Britain has now abandoned circumcision altogether having only a few done to Muslims and Jews. other English speaking cultures are now rapidly falling into line with modern medical experience with the USA being the most isolated also being the slowest to abandon it.

In the Philippines and South Korea young people are still being circumcised as a result of US influence in their affairs. Youths are circumcised in tribal Africa, eastern Polynesia, parts of Melanesia and outback Australia as right of passage traditions.

Male circumcision is rare or unknown in the rest of the world.
