Conduction is like a mexican wave because the atoms in a metal are solid and very close together, unlike the particle arrangement of liquids and gases. Therefore, when the metal is heated up the atoms (particles, as they are better known), begin to vibrate even more (they were already vibrating a little before). The very hot atoms bump into the neighbouring atoms and spread the vibration to all the other atoms and also the heat energy.
