A force is needed to start something moving and to stop it once it is moving. A force can make something speed up or slow down. Friction is a force generated when surfaces move across each other.

Friction can occur in several different ways. Kinetic friction can occur as in two surfaces sliding one over another, or a surface and a fluid. With sliding friction, the coefficient of friction is defined as the ratio of the force resisting sliding and the force pressing the two surfaces together, and is usually less than one, though sometimes it can be greater than one, for example rubber on dry concrete.

Aircraft experience friction between the surfaces of the plane and the air, which is another type of kinetic friction.

Kinetic friction produces heat as the result of the work done by the frictional force.

Friction also occurs between static surfaces, such as an object on a ramp, where the frictional force prevents the object sliding down under gravity.

The better question would be "how can't a frictional force be produced?" as frictional force is produced in any sort of motion. Even when we are standing still, we are still 'moving' in a bigger sense, and therefore have friction.

Friction, is the resistance of an object in motion against moving, usually by rubbing against whatever an object is traveling on or through.

If a ball is rolling on the ground, the frictional force is a mixture of gravity and the surface of the floor, if it is in the air it is the friction between it and air molecules, and even the wind has friction, believe it or not.

If there wasn't friction, when you go for a walk and take a step, your forward momentum would send you hurtling forwards, increasing your speed at an exponential rate until you hit something.

Now, if you wanted to produce a frictional force for whatever reason, beyond the naturally occurring ones, you could just add any sort of force moving in the opposite direction of what was moving.

For instance, if a ball is rolling, you could blow at it as it rolled towards you, your breath adding to what is pushing it back naturally until it came to a complete stop. Or if a ball was rolling on a treadmill, you could turn the treadmill on and it would eventually reach negligible movement before being carried off.

Friction is not made of anything, rather it is a concept:

When two things rub together, it creates heat energy because of the movement between the two. This is because the molecules are bouncing together as you rub them, causing them to heat up, and create friction.

You can try this out if you have really dry feet, take off your socks and run in one spot on a carpet while leaning on a bed or something. The carpet will start to feel hot after a while. Also, try having an ice cube melting contest-you will not be surprised to hear that rubbing your hands together is the most effective way.

Please do not delete this, I am only a grade 6 student trying to make sense of all this new molecule knowledge. If I am wrong, please build on my answer below or above. Thank you!

Friction is made when two forces touch each other.
