Answer:

God's name is SACRED.

Most people don't give much thought as to how important His name is.

It is so sacred, that God made a "capital law" among the Ten Commandments worthy of "capital punishment" (death) for transgressions against it.

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain." (Ex.20:7)

In his "outline for prayer," Jesus advocates, when we address His Father to whom our prayers are to be directed... that we FIRST acknowledge His reverent name.

"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, HALLOWED BE THY NAME..." (Matt.6:9).

Most men give little thought to God's sacred name. He created man with a great purpose in mind. He should be foremost in our thoughts as His first Commandment says: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." (Ex.20:3)

Yet, He is not first with men, isn't revered by men, as worldly cares and concerns distract men from giving the Creator His due - utter respect and adoration.

The question of vanity in the example above depends upon how the phrase is used.

Is it used in a fervent heartfelt prayer to the Father? No vanity there.

Is it used in a thoughtless expletive in casual mindless conversation? Yes. There is no conscious reverence in such a use of God's name.

You are using the Lord's name for a meaningless purpose, and without respect.

It is not speaking about him or to him but as an expression. Which means that it is neither right or wrong to use. It is a simple expression of surprise or shock.

God's name is so sacred, that there is a capital law that protects it. A capital law is punishable by death... capital punishment. The command to utterly respect God's name is one of the Ten "capital" Commandments... the transgression of which is God's definition of "SIN" (I John 3:4).

"For the wages of sin is death..." (Rom.6:23).

In Jesus' lesson on how we should "pray" to our Father in heaven, the very first thing we are to do after we address Him in the opening of our prayers is to "acknowledge the sanctity of His name":

"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, HALLOWED BE THY NAME..." (Matt.6:9).

God's name is not to be trifled with, like a loaded gun in an untrained hand. Especially by those who know the Truth about it and have the knowledge and understanding regarding the gravity of its sanctity and its Holiness.

It is not to be used "casually" or "frivolously"... or in any kind of a foolish manner.

If God's Truth is known to you... bear His name in wisdom and understanding.

Ignorant men will continue to wield it foolishly and be enlightened about in their own time.

The Lord has told us what is good and what is evil... and He has given us the ability to obey or disobey. Choose wisely.
