All insects are animals. However, a spider is not an insect. Spiders are in a class called Arachnids. All insects have a pair of antennae, 6 legs, and 3 main body parts (tagmata): the head, thorax, and abdomen. Spiders have no antennae, 8 legs, and 2 tagmata: the cephalothorax and the abdomen.

Because they do not have the features of an insect (plus insects are mainly creatures that fly or crawl.)

Insects are defined as having a chitinous exoskeleton, a body that is segmented into three parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes and three jointed legs. Slugs and spiders do not share all of these traits with insects. Slugs are gastropod mollusks and spiders are arachnids.
